Chicken Classes

Page Image - Backyard Chickens 101 bFor the most part, chickens are very easy to raise and care for. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to learn, and the more knowledge you have about your new backyard friends, the more enjoyable and carefree your flock keeping experience will be.

Join Don & Suzy from Manatee Chickens for their hands-on class “Backyard Chickens 101”. Learn the basics of chicken keeping right on the farm where you’ll have a chance to handle chickens of different ages, examine different coop designs and learn everything you’ll need to get started.

Whether you have taken your first few steps or have not yet begun your journey, you are sure to walk away with a better understanding of how to manage your flock. Topics include:

  • Choosing the best breed for you.
  • Where to get your chickens.
  • How to start with baby chicks.
  • Caring for adult chickens.
  • Coop design considerations.
  • Biosecurity and chicken health.
  • How to handle and store eggs safely.
  • What to do when chickens stop laying.

Class size is limited, allowing participants to get the most out of this unique hands on experience.

This class is suitable for ages 16 and up. Child care is not provided.

During the chicken coop tour, participants will walk approximately 500 feet across field-like terrain. If you have any mobility concerns, please let us know and we will be happy to accommodate you as best we can.

Cost is $30 per person or two people for $45.
